Designed to accommodate a growing family and their dogs, Lyrebird House harmoniously integrates with its natural surroundings, respecting the site’s contours and establishing a seamless connection with the garden. Two slender east-facing pavilions are linked by a courtyard bridge, enhancing airflow and creating sheltered spaces to the north and south. Expansive living areas provide sweeping views of the beach, with timber screens allowing controlled light filtering to suit changing climatic conditions and user preferences.
The extensive garden, designed collaboratively by the client, landscape architect, and architect, complements the home’s natural setting.
Lyrebird House combines mass timber construction with traditional craftsmanship, employing prefabricated cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels for rapid wall and roof assembly. This approach minimized construction waste and increased carbon sequestration while maintaining a robust, tactile finish suited to the coastal environment. Exterior cladding features silvered pine white weatherboards and smooth render, creating a fresh beach house aesthetic that resonates with the surrounding landscape.
Interiors feature timber batten screening, lime-rendered walls, and bespoke joinery, providing a tactile, layered material palette that balances durability with warmth. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, generous stairwells, and high western clerestory louvres maximize natural light, ventilation, and passive cooling. On humid days, a 20 kW photovoltaic-powered air conditioning system ensures comfort. Rainwater storage of 25,000 L supplies both domestic use and garden irrigation, while the pool provides visual relief, screens the road, and further cools breezes entering the home.
Natural ventilation and thermal mass are the primary cooling strategies, while CLT panels and thoughtful design reduce the home’s environmental footprint. Lyrebird House embodies a balance of comfort, sustainability, and a strong connection to the coastal landscape.
Explore a home where material authenticity, environmental responsibility, and a connection to the Sunshine Coast landscape create a uniquely engaging and livable beach house.
