Designed in 1968 by Brisbane architect John Railton for artist Pam Wilson and her engineer husband Patrick, this timber beach house was conceived as a simple, robust box among the dunes, in the spirit of Cape Cod summer houses. A double-height living space opens to the ocean through oversized shutters, while bedrooms sit above on the street side, connected by an internal verandah overlooking the space below.

The house’s signature is its beach-facing edge: a built-in bench seat close to ground level, framed by shutters that open the living area to the outdoors by day and secure it by night. Restricted side views concentrate attention on the ocean, creating a striking contrast between enclosure and openness throughout this precise yet unpretentious framework for casual coastal living.
